  • UTS is partnering with the Australian Museum to establish a prize for excellence in data science as part of the nation’s premier science awards program, the Eureka Prizes
  • The award recognises the growth and impact of data science in informing discovery and innovation across research disciplines from oceanography, medicine and physics to market research
  • The growth and impact of data science in informing discovery and innovation across research disciplines has been dramatic. In recognition of this, UTS is partnering with the Australian Museum to establish a prize for excellence in data science as part of the nation’s premier science awards program – the Eureka Prizes.

“Data Science is a very important research area for theory, technology and its applications. You can already see the influence of data science, transforming entire industries from oceanography, medicine and physics to market research,” says UTS Executive Director of Data Science, Distinguished Professor Chengqi Zhang.

“The impact of data science is very real – both in its application to every conceivable industry, but also in its ability to enable cutting-edge technologies.”

The UTS Eureka Prize for Excellence in Data Science awards AU$10,000 to an individual or team who have made either breakthrough discoveries or a significant impact in data science research.

“The achievements of the Eureka Prize finalists are inspirational and vitally important for Australia,” says Australian Museum Director and CEO, Kim McKay AO.

“Establishing this award highlights the pioneering reputation of UTS in both academia and scientific fields, and we look forward to receiving high quality applications for this award in its inaugural year.”

Zhang believes the new award will stimulate Australian researchers to excel in the field of data science.

“Recognising data science through a Eureka Prize category supports the UTS belief of data science as a rapidly evolving field that can influence the world in ways that we can only dream of.

“I hope this prize will encourage great Australian researchers to collaborate with other domain knowledge experts to make data science more powerful.”

Entries for the UTS Eureka Prize for Excellence in Data Science are open until 7pm AEST Friday 5 May 2017. For full details of this prize, and the 14 other prizes across the categories of Research and Innovation, Leadership, Science Engagement and School Science, visit the Australian Museum website.
