ABOUT THE POSITION:
The Chief Executive Officer is accountable for the formulation and delivery of the vision and overall direction for Museum Victoria, and ensuring the responsible management of its people, culture, collection, assets and stakeholder relationships.
The Chief Executive Officer will lead the transformational change of Museum Victoria in a strategic and visionary manner. He or she will approach this task with distinctive ideas for creating a dramatic, world-class museum. A focus on public interest and developing a high performance culture of willingness to be the best is required.
Specific duties include:
- Lead the development and implementation of Museum Victoria’s strategic objectives to ensure the delivery of world-class cultural facilities, research programs, digital experiences, collection management practices, commercial businesses, and public and education programming.
- Maintain a strong working relationship with the Museums Board of Victoria and provide timely, authoritative advice and information to the Board.
- Build a collaborative relationship with Creative Victoria and undertake effective advocacy on behalf of Museum Victoria with government departments and agencies that are strategically aligned with the museum’s activities.
- Provide leadership to the Executive Management Team to engender a collaborative approach to strategic decision making and to the effective operation of Museum Victoria.
- Represent Museum Victoria as its principal spokesperson and lead the promotion of the Museum Victoria brand nationally and internationally through the media and through key stakeholder relationships with government departments, funding bodies, program partners, peer institutions and community organisations.
- Develop a resilient organisational culture that supports the networked structure of Museum Victoria and that values the health, safety, wellbeing and development of staff. Maintain clear lines of communication internally to ensure that all staff understand how they contribute to the strategic direction of Museum Victoria.
- As the Accountable Officer, ensure the effective management of financial resources and promulgate a strong culture of risk management that delivers on Museum Victoria’s compliance obligations.
- Oversee the fundraising activities of Museum Victoria and the generation of additional income streams and new business activities that diversify and grow Museum Victoria’s revenue base.
- Ensure that Museum Victoria remains at the forefront of the application of digital technologies by the museum sector.
- Support and promote the relationship of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities with Museum Victoria.
- Provide leadership for the Communications and Partnerships Department in audience development and communication, driving Museum Victoria’s brand positioning and developing fundraising strategies.
- Comply with Museum Victoria’s policies and procedures and with relevant legislation and regulations.
OTHER INFORMATION
This position is full time. The Chief Executive Officer is appointed by the Museums Board of Victoria, with the approval of the Minister for Creative Industries, for a term not exceeding 5 years (which may be renewed).
A remuneration package befitting a Chief Executive of this calibre will be offered, within the Executive Officer 2 band within the Victoria Public Service.
