An opportunity exists for a highly motivated History Curator to join the Museum at an exciting time of redevelopment and renewal. The role is varied and will require enthusiasm, warmth and flexibility. You will work with the Head of Human History to provide leadership and expertise to the History team and to the wider Human History department on a range of collection related activities. You will be responsible for research, collection access, enquiries, providing curatorial expertise to the development of exhibitions, gallery development and public programmes, driving digital engagement, and supporting research activities relating to the History collection.

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of social and war history collections and material culture, preferably with a strength in Auckland history or contemporary studies.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of best practice in collection care and development relating to history collections.
  • Proactive awareness and engagement with a wide range of cultures and associated protocol and traditions within Auckland, with particular reference to the Maori Dimension (He Korahi Maori) and Pacific Dimension (Teu le Va)
  • Demonstrated understanding and commitment to collections and their interpretive value, and as a core resource for museum activities.
  • Evidence of strong networks with social history societies, associations and communities at local, national and international levels.
  • Experience managing staff and/or volunteers working in a collection or research environment in a museum.
  • Experience/aptitude in digital humanities, digital storytelling, and curatorial use of online resources.
  • Evidence of ability to work collaboratively and in cross-functional teams.
  • Understand the principles of equal opportunities, diversity management and the Treaty of Waitangi as they relate to the Museum environment.
