Duties
The Curatorial and Research section is responsible for the development of the Museum’s collections, research, exhibitions and outreach programs. It has three thematic areas – Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander cultures and histories; Australian history and society since 1788; and People’s interaction with the environment. The section has the following responsibilities:
- Developing the National Historical Collection to represent Australian history and experience for present and future generations;
- Managing and developing high-quality exhibitions and other programs that are challenging and entertaining for national and international audiences;
- Enhancing the NMA’s research standing as an authority on Australian history and associations;
- Cultivating partnerships with leading cultural and academic organisations and associations
- Facilitating access to the collections for internal and external stakeholders; and
- Contributing to the development of a stimulating and productive workplace in which staff are valued and respected.
Responsibilities of the position
As a Curator you will take a key role in the development and delivery of collection, exhibition and research projects, publications, outreach programs and visitor services. You will be responsible for:
- Researching and developing content for permanent galleries and temporary exhibitions incorporating the use of new technology as required;
- Contributing to the development, research and documentation of the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander component of the National Historical Collection;
- Providing expertise relating to Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander histories and cultures;
- Preparing correspondences, briefing material, reports and proposals as required;
- Consulting stakeholders and representing the Museum in external and internal forums and discussions as required;
- Other curatorial duties as required; and
- Ensuring that you have sufficient supervision, instruction and equipment to undertake you work safely.
Curators are encouraged to publish in the Museum’s three thematic areas and in museology and to participate in broader curatorial forums and events.
