Auckland Museum is an influential, much-loved organisation at the centre of Auckland’s identity, committed to developing and sharing engaging content through its galleries, exhibitions, events and educational programmes.

This is an exceptional opportunity; you will bring learning expertise and be able to deliver innovative, engaging, and relevant learning experiences for diverse audiences onsite, online, and beyond our walls. You must have experience working with children (teaching experience preferred) and the ability to work with all ages.

A varied and interesting position, you will be part of a team of five learning specialists who inspire students across all subjects and year levels. We are currently seeking two learning specialists, preferably with deep knowledge and expertise in teaching either Matauranga Maori, ESOL or in the Secondary sector.

Key accountabilities include;

  • The development and delivery of best practice GLAM sector education programmes ensuring excellence and innovation.
  • Ensuring the Maori Dimension (He Korahi Maori) and Pacific Dimension (Teu le Va) are embedded into education programmes.
  • Developing high-quality and innovative digital offers including learning resources and identifying and staying on top of trends in digital media learning across a range of settings (in schools, in homes, in museums).
  • Working with other museum staff to develop and market the museum learning programme;
  • Representing and promoting the museum on external educational bodies in order to establish a network of useful and productive partnerships.
  • Contributing to gallery renewal as part of a dynamic Learning and Engagement team.

To be successful in this role, you will have;

  • A minimum of two to three years’ experience in the education and/or GLAM sector.
  • Quality degree in education, museum studies, or related speciality.
  • A strong passion for learning with a relevant tertiary or teaching qualification or equivalent work experience in New Zealand Ministry of Education Schools (Year 1-13).
  • Proven ability to develop and deliver engaging, inspirational learning programmes and resources for all types of visitors that will meet their learning needs and support effective teaching and learning.
  • Proven experience using the Universal Design for Learning framework when developing learning programmes.
  • Superb communication skills with the ability to walk into a room and inspire with your confidence and knowledge.
  • Knowledge of the NZ Curriculum, Te Whariki Early Childhood Curriculum, Te Matauranga Maori and/or contemporary learning theory with the ability to translate to a museum environment.
  • Proven experience of embedding Maori tikanga and Pacific dimensions into education programming.
  • Excellent pronunciation of Te Reo Maori and confidence to use appropriate greetings and/or commonly understood phrases applicable to the Museum setting. A high level of competency in Maori or a Pacific language would be very desirable.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a cross functional team environment.
