About the Role 

The Project Assistant is a project role supporting the delivery of significant First Nations-led projects and exhibitions at the heart of the Australian Museum First Nations Division. The role will work closely with the Lead, Major Projects (First Nations) to encompass exhibitions and projects associated with the creation, upgrade, and revitalisation of Museum spaces as well as other capital works projects within the First Nations Division.

You will have the opportunity to develop specialised cultural competency and project management expertise while working with internal and external First Nations stakeholders, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander exhibition contributors, community members, and Australian Museum colleagues. This is a meaningful opportunity to support projects that deliver lasting social and cultural impact while maintaining cultural integrity and applying Indigenous Cultural & Intellectual Property (ICIP) principles throughout.

About you 

You will bring a passion for First Nations cultures, strong organisational and interpersonal skills, and proficiency in standard office software (including Microsoft Office). You’re eager to learn project management tools, procurement systems, contracting procedures, and museum-specific processes.

Supporting the Project Manager, you’ll contribute to groundbreaking projects through administration, research, and stakeholder engagement. This role offers meaningful opportunities to develop skills in project management, cultural development, and museum practice.

The Project Assistant is an Identified role.

Essential Requirements

  •  Aboriginal and/or Torres Strait Islander. Aboriginality/Torres Strait Islander is a genuine occupational qualification and is authorised under section 14(d) of the Anti-Discrimination Act 1977 (NSW).
  •  Appropriate approved tertiary qualifications or relevant equivalent professional practice in project management or arts administration.

 

Knowledge & Experience

  •  Experience with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander arts and cultural practices, as well as practical application of cultural protocols is desirable.
  •  Experience in managing and negotiating with multiple stakeholders, who have competing demands, to deliver positive outcomes.
  •  Good communication skills in multiple formats, be able to express your point clearly. For example; verbal (face to face), email or video conferencing.
  •  Capacity to perform the range of tasks and use a variety of software applications in museum project delivery, management, and delivery. Capacity to learn new software applications, for example, archiving, procurement processing, contract management.
  •  Experience interacting with First Nations, Pasifika, and/or CALD (cultures and languages other than English) communities.
  •  Holds a current full NSW Driver’s Licence. The role holder must be prepared to travel between the AM’s various sites and to external stakeholders as needed to support the work of the First Nations Division and the AM.
