Position Description

The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) is northern Australia’s premier cultural institution. It offers a dynamic and diverse arts, science and cultural program to over 200,000 visitors each year. The MAGNT’s objective is to maintain the highest standards of excellence in preserving, researching, exhibiting and communicating the record of natural history, art and peoples of the Northern Territory. Its mission is ‘making sense of the world by discovering and interpreting the past and present for the future’.

Primary Objective:

Reporting to the Director and working in partnership with the Board, staff and other volunteers, this position is responsible for implementing and completing a $7 million capital campaign to support the repurposing of The Chan building in central Darwin as a world class art museum. The Development Manager will work closely with the MAGNT team to carry out a broad-based fundraising plan targeting individuals, corporations, foundations and government agencies.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Implement and manage a $7 million capital campaign that supports an $18.3 million repurposing of The Chan building.
  2. Work collaboratively to cultivate identified institutional prospects, prepare foundation and government grant proposals and manage individual gift solicitation, tracking and acknowledgements.
  3. Work collaboratively to manage the writing and development of capital campaign collateral materials integrating campaign milestones into ongoing public relations outreach.
  4. Manage cultivation and recognition events, and the rededication ceremony.
  5. Recruit and manage campaign volunteers by scheduling and supporting campaign leadership meetings.
  6. Manage the capital campaign fundraising budget.
  7. Manage campaign record keeping, evaluate progress, prepare periodic reports on fundraising and present to the Board and senior staff; recommend revisions to the fundraising plan, as needed, to meet goals.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Bachelor’s degree (with Master’s degree preferred) and familiarity with non-profit cultural institutions and/or the visual arts.
  2. At least three years of experience in fundraising with a proven track record of success in capital campaigns.
  3. Knowledge of national and international philanthropic communities that support the arts.
  4. Demonstrated experience in producing campaign materials.
  5. Energetic, self-motivated, flexible and adaptable with a sense of humour, able to multi-task and work independently in a small, hands-on work environment.
  6. A team player with an attitude of service and ability to motivate others.
  7. Sound computer literacy and data management skills within a fundraising context.
  8. Highly developed communication and networking skills at the institutional, government and community levels
  9. An ability to interact effectively with people from different cultures and a sound understanding of Work Health Safety (WHS) practises to ensure WHS system compliance.
