The Sovereign Hill Museums Association is one of Australia’s leading independent not for profit museum organisations. Our purpose is to inspire an understanding of the significance of the central Victorian gold rushes in Australia’s national story.
We collect, conserve and interpret the mining, social, cultural and environmental heritage of the Ballarat region through our world-famous Sovereign Hill Outdoor Museum, the Gold Museum Ballarat, the Blood on the Southern Cross sound and light show and our pastoral property, Narmbool. We are a Gold Winner in the 2015 Australian Tourism Awards and have over 750,000 ticketed visitors per annum and growing with a major capital outlay in the next few years. Over 25% of our visitors are international tourists.
We are inviting applications to join our Senior Leadership team in this pivotal role as Director Museums.
Reporting to the CEO and leading a large team this role will be responsible for providing the professional leadership and direction in the following functional areas; Gold Museum and Sovereign Hill Curatorial and Collections Management, Exhibitions, Public Programs, Historical Research and publications, Sovereign Hill and ‘Narmbool’ Education Services, Volunteer Programs, Costume, Interpretive Programs and Training and Narmbool Site Management (excluding farm operations).
This position reports to and works closely with the Chief Executive Officer and Directors, Senior Managers and the Board to help set and manage the strategic direction of the Association and deliver key projects as well as to act as the Association’s senior museum professional in museum and educational forums.
TO BE SUCCESSFUL YOU WILL NEED:
- Senior experience in museum work, including collections management and the development and implementation of exhibition programs, public programs and interpretation programs using digital media,
- An informed knowledge of Australian History, with particular reference to the impact of the gold rushes on Australia’s’ development as a nation
- Demonstrated leadership skills and the ability to motivate staff to work as a team to achieve organisational goals
- Proven ability to analyse, formulate, initiate and implement successful management strategies
- Proven ability to communicate and negotiate with a wide range of organisations and individuals to maintain community and financial support for Museums programs
- Sound financial skills and business acumen
