Director & CEO: Dr John Chappell

John Chappell is the CEO of Scitech, Western Australia’s Science Discovery Centre, which delivers interactive STEM experiences to people in the Discovery Centre and by travelling to every corner of the state, as well as supporting teachers through professional learning programs.

With a doctorate in chemistry from the University of Queensland, the early part of John’s career was as a research chemist in the resources sector. He transitioned quickly into senior positions due to his leadership abilities, before transitioning to the Australian Institute of Marine Science (AIMS) in 2011.  As AIMS Chief Operating Officer, John was responsible for securing new funding, improving organisational safety, developing crucial stakeholder relationships within Government and corporate sectors, and delivering organisational and financial success.

John is passionate about science and views it as a way of life rather than a vocation, bringing scientific thinking to his leadership approach.

About SCITECH

Scitech is a not-for-profit organisation with a purpose to inspire engagement by all Western Australians in science, technology, engineering and maths.

The Scitech Discovery Centre was established in 1988 by three eminent Western Australians with a mission to embolden the state’s collective curiosity. Since then, Scitech has continued to deliver interactive STEM experiences to people in the Discovery Centre and by travelling to every corner of the state, as well as supporting teachers through professional learning programs.

We value and believe that developing STEM interest, awareness, participation and capability empowers our community to continue their journey of discovery and life-long learning.
