The MAAS Project is the relocation of the Powerhouse Museum and part of a wider government project for the creation of a new arts and cultural precinct in western Sydney. It represents a once in a generation opportunity to develop a twenty first century museum that responds to growth and the changing shape of Sydney, and to contemporary methods of content delivery, learning and collaboration.
The Opportunity
This is a rare opportunity to join a newly created project team, responsible for preparing the MAAS collection for digitisation and relocation to the Museums Discovery Centre.
As a member of the Assessment Phase project team, day to day you will work in partnership with an Assistant Registrar to carry out assessments of objects in the MAAS Collection and make recommendations regarding object treatment, packing and movement.
Multiple positions are available for Assistant Conservators to join our team. We are hiring for teams to commence immediately in March 2019, and will also be establishing a talent pool for teams that may start later in the year.

The successful candidate
To be successful in this role you will have:
- An applied knowledge of standard handling, care, storage, packing and crating and installation procedures for museum collection objects is essential
- HSC or equivalent and basic knowledge of chemistry and laboratory procedures
- Sound written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to collaborate with team members and key stakeholders on complex projects in a multidisciplinary organisation
- Demonstrated understanding of risk management and disaster preparedness
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team
- Driver’s license required or willingness to obtain
