Duties

The Australian War Memorial (AWM) combines a shrine, a world-class museum and an extensive archive. The Memorial’s purpose is to commemorate the sacrifice of those Australians who have died in war or on operational service and those who have served our nation in times of conflict as well as peacekeeping operations. The Minister for Veterans and Defence Personnel has portfolio responsibility for the Memorial’s affairs. The AWM employs over 300 staff, has an annual operating budget of $61 million and attracts more than one million visitors each year.

As Director, you will assume responsibility for the governance, leadership, strategic direction and general management of this important and highly respected institution at a time of major change. This will include oversight of a recently announced $498 million expansion program, continued promotion of the AWM’s national and international standing as a world-class institution, development of collaborative and enduring relationships with key stakeholders, including ex-service organisations, and the provision of high-level policy advice to the Minister and the Council. You will also be expected to represent the AWM in a wide range of public settings and in the media.

To be a strong contender, you will need to be an exceptional senior executive with the passion, commitment and knowledge necessary to lead the Memorial as it goes through a period of substantial change. A comprehensive understanding of military history will be an advantage. Importantly, you will have an emotional connection to the purpose of the Memorial, as well as strong commercial acumen, outstanding communication and representation skills, well-honed stakeholder engagement capabilities, and a personal style that engenders trust and respect. You will also have experience in, or the capacity to engage in political and parliamentary processes. Previous experience in the leadership and management of a significant cultural institution will be well regarded but is not essential.
