Established in 1879, the museum includes the Powerhouse Museum, Sydney Observatory and the Museums Discovery Centre. The Museum is custodian to over half a million objects of national and international significance and is considered one of the finest and most diverse collections in Australia.
The Powerhouse Precinct at Parramatta is one of the largest cultural infrastructure projects currently being undertaken in Australia. The project will transform and renew one of Australia’s oldest and most important cultural institutions and carry forward its legacy to reflect the changing needs of the contemporary communities of NSW. A key element of the project is the relocation and digitisation of the Museum collection.
The Opportunity
An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Deputy Team Leader Registration (Assistant Registrar Grade 2) to be part of the Collection Relocation Digitisation Project. The role is to help a project team working on the preparation of the collection currently stored at Ultimo for digitisation and relocation to the Museums Discovery Centre.
Reporting to the Team Leader Registration, in this role you will:
- Carry out packing/digitisation of the museum collection and make recommendations regarding packing, movement, and photography of objects
- Provide support to the Team Leader to assist the Packing/Digitisation teams and ‘trouble shoot’ object issues as they arise during these phases.
- Provide day-to-day supervision of the Assistant Registrars.
- Work across all MAAS sites

Role 1 – Until December 2021 (Digitisation team)
Role 2 – Until December 2022 (Packing team)
The successful candidate
To be successful in this role you will have;
- Sound knowledge and experience in museum collection management and documentation, including storage and exhibition processes.
- Experience in the handling, packing, transport and storage of all types of museum objects, to professional museum level, and sound knowledge of national and international freight procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team
- Excellent organisational and administrative skills and attention to detail
- Knowledge and experience of collection information systems, barcoding and digital photography
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare high-quality documentation and reports
- Demonstrated understanding of risk management and disaster preparedness
- Ability to prioritise and balance responsibilities and meet project deadlines
