The key duties of the position include:

Reporting to the Touring Exhibitions Manager, this role is responsible for increasing public access to the Museum through the coordination and effective administration of Museums onsite temporary and travelling exhibitions that serve to educate and entertain existing and new audiences from international, metropolitan, regional and remote locations. You will be is responsible for delivering world-class immersive, surprising, personal and authentic exhibitions to visitors across Australia and the world.

Your responsibilities will include but are not limited to the following:

  • Collaborate with the Manager, Touring and Temporary Exhibitions to plan, develop, execute and evaluate a forward exhibitions strategy that overlays onsite activities with touring programs.
  • Apply understanding of the organisation’s goals, corporate plan and priorities to deliver impactful projects, improve processes and drive sustainable practices.
  • Coordinate and project manage small-to-medium-size exhibitions that, where practicable, are suitable for the needs of regional venues.
  • Responsible for capturing and administering reporting metrics per internal, National Collecting Institution and Budget Portfolio Statement requirements.
  • Develop and implement project plans, budgets, and contract administration and manage project priorities to anticipate and respond effectively to problems.
  • Communicate effectively to different stakeholders to obtain buy-in or receive feedback and provide advice and expertise on matters relating to the work.
  • Provide information and advice in a timely manner in support of broader museum sponsorship and philanthropy initiatives, collaborating with sponsorship teams within the Museum as required.
  • Create appropriate support material and estimate budgets for grant applications from government grant programs.
  • Compile milestone reports, and complete acquittal documents for grant-funded programs or escalate issues with recommendations concerning challenges and risks to timely expenditure and acquittal.
  • Effectively oversee and report on designated project budgets (Grant, Capital & Operational) for temporary and touring programs.

Touring

  • Coordinate and project manage the development of touring-specific high-quality small-to-mid-scale exhibits in different formats for regional distribution.
  • Administer venue bookings, action maintenance needs and arrange freight movements for existing and planned touring displays.
  • Ensure the ANMM’s outbound touring exhibitions are communicated effectively and accurately to different stakeholders to increase visibility of brand, collections and subject-matter expertise.
  • Direct internal groups and value their expertise and skills to create relevant supporting exhibition documentation such as installation manuals, marketing style guides and maintenance documentation for the Museum’s touring exhibition programs.
  • Align, where possible, programs of offsite work and communications with participants receiving funds through the MMAPPS program.
  • Provide administrative support for travel allowance applications made by members of the Exhibitions & Collections section.

Resourcing and supervision

  • Reports on day-to-day, leave planning and project matters to the Manager, Touring and Temporary Exhibitions
  • Seeks the Manager’s support in escalating issues to the Head of Exhibitions and Collections.
  • Matters relating to leave approvals, personal leave requirements and remuneration to be discussed with the Head of Exhibitions and Collections as appropriate.

Key Selection Criteria:

  • Project management skills including organisational, budget development, time management and scheduling to meet delivery timelines.
  • Strong organisation and administrative skills, and experience in administering grants using grant specific online systems, such as Smarty Grants.
  • Experience working collaboratively with multi-disciplinary teams with applied knowledge of the roles of conservation, design and registration staff in developing exhibitions.
  • Experience in object handling and the installation of collection material in exhibition environments.
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills (written and verbal) with an ability to present and communicate information to a diverse range of stakeholders within the Arts & Culture, and specifically Maritime sector.
  • A bachelor’s degree in museum studies, cultural heritage or equivalent tertiary qualifications.

Selection for this position will be made on the basis of relative merit which will be assessed against each item of the selection criteria. Applications that do not address the selection criteria will not be considered for shortlisting by the Selection Committee.
