Working closely with the Concept Developers the work involves developing, interpreting and applying the Gallery Development Plans; undertaking research and analysis of the National Collection, assessing content in order to describe collection items; handling, storing and displaying collection material; liaison and negotiation with donors and coordination with stakeholders; and assistance with project development where necessary. Interpreting the overall storyline and themes for the Gallery, you will be required to provide expertise and recommendations for development and management of the Gallery including research and interpretation of the collection.
You will also be required to work across multiple Memorial systems such as collection management systems (MICA, Piction and MediaBin) and document management systems (SharePoint and Trim) on a daily basis.
This position entails working with potentially distressing and culturally sensitive material.
Core Responsibilities
Under general direction undertake a range of tasks related to the Gallery Development including:
- Contribute to the development of the Galleries by identifying and assessing potential collection material for display.
- Preparing acquisition proposals for new additions to the collection.
- Contribute to the publication and research assignments for the exhibitions.
- Produce high quality written work in formats such as catalogue records, exhibition text, correspondence, minutes and reports.
- Undertake accessioning and cataloguing of collection material, documenting them on the Memorial’s collection management systems (MICA and MediaBin).
- Arrange for conservation and photography of items where necessary.
- Undertake administrative and project tasks in a multi-disciplinary team.
- Liaise with other areas within the Memorial, in particular Conservation, Registration and Exhibitions, in the planning and production of the exhibitions.
- Respond to copyright issues in relation to collection items to be displayed.
- Participate in team planning and training processes.
- Undertake manual handling and movement of a wide range of objects including but not limited to artworks, boxes, framed prints, photographic negatives and other collection items as required.
Desirable Criteria
Tertiary qualifications in history or museum and curatorial studies would be highly regarded.
