About the Role
The Technical Officer Digitising role sits within the Collection Enhancement Project Digitising Unit as part of the Australian Museum Research Institute. This role is offered on a temporary full-time basis for a period of 18 months.
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Australian Museum and help make their collections accessible to the world. You will provide technical support to the Museum’s Collection Enhancement Project, working closely with collection staff, barcoding staff and the EMu database and DigiVol teams, to digitise the AM’s collections.
Particular focus will be placed on working with fragile specimens from the Mineralogy and Petrology collections and will require physically demanding tasks. Other tasks will include basic identification and registration of specimens within the Museums database and photography of specimens using specialised photographic equipment.

About You
You will be required to use your prior experience to increase the impact of scientific and cultural collections of the Australian Museum (AM) by undertaking technical work supporting the digitisation of Australian Museum collections as part of the Collection Enhancement Project.
Your Knowledge & Experience
To be successful in this role you will:
- Demonstrate appropriate handling of fragile minerals and rocks in a collection setting
- Possess a basic knowledge of the classification systems for minerals and rocks
- Support the Collection Managers in the maintenance and curation of the collection including the ability to handle fragile specimens/objects and labels.
- Prior experience in working with collection database systems and experience in imaging (i.e., taking high quality photographs) of collection specimens/objects.
- Understand and follow WH&S legislation and regulations.
Essential Requirements
- Tertiary qualifications or equivalent training in geology or earth and environmental sciences, or equivalent experience in working with geological collections.
