The Role
The Australian War Memorial combines a shrine, a world-class museum, and an extensive archive. The Memorial’s purpose is to commemorate the sacrifice of those Australians who have died in war or on operational service and those who have served our nation in times of conflict. Its mission is leading remembrance and understanding of Australia’s wartime experience.
The Exhibitions Section has responsibility for the development and management of the Memorial’s galleries and touring exhibitions programme. This includes the planning and delivery of permanent and temporary exhibitions, displays and travelling exhibitions, including the implementation of an extensive gallery maintenance programme and integration during the Development project.
The Section is looking for an EL1 Manager, Galleries and Exhibitions to work with the team. The role requires an experienced project manager in the delivery of exhibition design projects within the museum or cultural sector; an understanding of museum practices; the ability to contribute to several projects simultaneously at various phases; mentoring staff members, collaboration and liaison with Memorial staff, stakeholders and external contractors.
Core Responsibilities
Working with the Head of Exhibitions, the EL1 Manager, Galleries and Exhibitions, will provide project management, administration and delivery of transition projects that integrate the Development project with existing Memorial exhibitions and displays. Works include:
- Manage all aspects in the planning, integration and delivery of transition exhibition projects; and general exhibitions and displays as required;
- Development and preparation of exhibition documentation for curatorial, collection, design, production, fabrication, construction, through all exhibition development phases;
- Establish and maintain productive working relationships with the Development team, Transition Working Group and Memorial staff and contractors as required;
- Collaborate with the exhibition team to deliver transition projects and other works against the agreed business plan;
- Identifying opportunities for improved working practices; and advocate for the highest standard exhibition display, design and interpretation;
- Contribute to the preparation of reports, schedules and presentations as required;
- Develop, manage and report against exhibition development and maintenance budgets;
- Coordinate the planning of installation and demount of identified exhibitions;
- Manage procurement of goods and services as they relate to the exhibition program including the development and management of contracts;
- Manage and coordinate meetings and prepare and distribute minutes as required;
- Manage the establishment and monitoring of exhibition lists;
- Develop and implement exhibition policies and practices;
- Manage multimedia and image orders using the Memorial’s digital media systems
- Other administrative tasks as required.
