For over 165 years, the South Australian Museum has been dedicated to making Australia’s natural and cultural heritage accessible, engaging and enjoyable for all. The Museum excels in fostering engagement with remote and regional communities and leads in the areas of Australian Indigenous heritage and natural history research, particularly in relation to biodiversity. Its core purpose is to care for South Australia’s natural and cultural collections and to grow, research and share this heritage to build a legacy that celebrates South Australia’s unique place in global history and deepens our knowledge of the world.
The Director will be responsible for offering expert strategic and operational guidance to the Board and the Executive Director, CreateSA, ensuring alignment with CreateSA’s priorities. Through effective leadership, commercial decision-making and implementing comprehensive, long-term organisational and financial strategies, the Director will ensure the Museum’s ongoing success and sustainability. Based in Adelaide, the Director will work with the Board, staff and relevant stakeholders to serve the community by growing and sharing our natural and cultural heritage.
The ideal candidate will have exceptional credibility in one or more aspects of the operations of the Museum, paired with an ability to engage, partner and communicate effectively locally and internationally with stakeholders, donors, benefactors and the academic community. You will therefore have a strong understanding of the broader context in which the Museum operates. You will have significant leadership qualities and experience and an inherent passion for the Museum through a strong record in research relevant to the interests of the Museum, collections and/or curation. Your ability to lead, collaborate and influence, will complement your ability to think strategically and creatively, whilst navigating challenges and delivering outcomes within a multifaceted environment.
