Powerhouse Research Symposium: Provenance

This symposium brings together museum professionals with an interest in contemporary issues around provenance research and due diligence.

Recent international developments and the Protection of Cultural Objects on Loan legislation have resulted in rigorous new guidelines for the museum sector. Major new initiatives to implement these changes will be discussed.

Dr Gerard Vaughan, keynote speaker, will provide an overview of the National Gallery of Australia’s new approaches to provenance research.

Professor Lyndel Prott, who has worked extensively with UNESCO, will speak on international conventions and legislation relevant to Australia.

Rebecca Rush will speak on the new federal best practice guide and PCOL legislation.

Dr Jacqui Strecker will talk about the display of art looted during World War II.

A panel discussion led by Judith Coombes will offer practical information and advice about the new guidelines in relation to international loans, acquisitions and exhibitions, with presentations from registrars and curators from the Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences and the National Museum of Australia.

The second in the MAAS Professional Series, this symposium aims to foster an open and creative dialogue between museum professionals, providing the opportunity to network, share information and develop a collaborative approach to addressing important issues facing the museum sector.
