Report on measuring trust in the ABS and our statistics, Australian Bureau of Statistics, August 2025
Results from the Community Trust in ABS Statistics Survey
About the Community Trust in ABS Statistics Survey (CTASS)
The Community Trust in ABS Statistics Survey (CTASS) measures levels of trust in the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), among the general Australian community and informed users of ABS statistics. The survey guides ABS statistical activities and informs strategies for engaging with data users and survey respondents. The main results are included in public performance reporting for the ABS.
In 2025 the ABS commissioned an external company, The Social Research Centre (SRC), to run CTASS. This allowed the ABS to obtain an independent view of the public’s opinions about the ABS and our statistics.
The 2025 CTASS was conducted in May 2025. It was the fourth cycle of the survey, which was also run in 2010, 2015, and 2020. These regular cycles help to identify changes in levels of trust in the ABS and official statistics. While previous cycles used telephone interviews, most responses in the 2025 cycle were through an online survey form.
The sample for the general community survey was drawn from the Life in Australia™ panel maintained by the SRC. This survey had a total of 2,267 responses, with respondents aged 15 years and older from every state and territory. Most of these completed an online survey form, with a small number completing telephone interviews.
The ABS provided the sample for the informed users of ABS statistics. It included academics, journalists and economists who are known users in direct contact with the ABS or were registered users of the ABS DataLab. There were 325 responses through an online survey form.
