Taikura Tri-Academy Indigenous Partnership

TAIKURA Aotearoa Tri-Academy Indigenous Summit, Royal Society Te Apārangi, November 2025

This Summit is the second of three that have been agreed between the Royal Society Te Apārangi, the Royal Society of Canada, and the Australian Academy of Science to establish an international, Indigenous-led research agenda.

The Society will host the Summit in Tāmaki Makaurau Auckland, with Māori Fellows Ngā Ahurei a Te Apārangi leading development of the programme. We will welcome delegations of Fellows and other eminent scholars from Australia and Canada.

Objective

Indigenous Fellows, thought leaders, and knowledge holders from Aotearoa New Zealand, Canada, and Australia will progress the kaupapa (agenda) of collaborative international Indigenous-led research.

Summit themes

  1. Leading and shaping international research agendas to include Indigenous knowledges and practices to solve pressing challenges
  2. Transforming academia for Indigenous peoples: addressing structural racism, epistemic violence, and inequities to reduce barriers for Indigenous scholars and students.
  3. Indigenising the academy by ensuring shared decision-making and genuine recognition of Indigenous knowledge and scholarship.
