Questacon has opened its newest gallery experience, Quantum Tomorrow: Imagined
Futures, an immersive science-art exhibition that invites visitors to imagine how
quantum technologies could shape Australia’s future. The exhibition was officially
launched by Assistant Minister for Science, Technology and the Digital Economy, Dr
Andrew Charlton and opened to the public on 2 July. This exhibition brings together
Australian research and creative storytelling to make one of science’s most exciting
frontiers accessible to audiences of all ages.
At its centre is a 15-metre-wide immersive digital video wall featuring 31 animated
stories that imagine future uses for quantum technologies, from concussion-
detecting helmets and ultra-secure communications to next-generation materials and
quantum-engineered foods. Visitors are encouraged to think about how these ideas
could influence healthcare, agriculture, manufacturing, environmental monitoring and
everyday life.
The exhibition was created in partnership with over 13 leading Australian Quantum
experts including Questacon Mind-In-Residence Dr Cathy Foley, and Canberra artist
Paul Summerfield, whose vibrant illustrations help turn complex science into
engaging, relatable stories. Suspended sculptures explore quantum sensing,
communication and computation, while a working cloud chamber gives visitors a rare
chance to see the paths of subatomic particles in real time.
Through science, creativity and imagination, Quantum Tomorrow: Imagined Futures
aims to spark curiosity and build confidence in quantum science. Perhaps the most
exciting aspect of the exhibition is that it invites every visitor to see the future, and
the role they might play in shaping it.
