Visitor Hosts – Permanent Part-Time & Casual
Are you a people person with a curious mind?
Do you love chatting to people, learning new things, sharing stories, and helping make someone’s day just that little bit better?
How about doing all of that surrounded by science, culture, history, butterflies, tropical creatures, and some seriously cool exhibitions?
We’re looking for some brilliant new Visitor Hosts to join the team at Tūhura Otago Museum!
Our Visitor Hosts are the friendly faces of Tūhura. They welcome people through our doors, help visitors discover what the Museum has to offer, bring our exhibitions and interactives to life, deliver tours and presentations, and make sure everyone from first-time visitors to regular Museum explorers has a fantastic experience.
And this isn’t your average customer service job.
One minute you might be helping a family find their way around the Museum, the next you’re explaining the science behind an interactive, delivering a presentation, or heading into the Tropical Forest to help care for its residents.
No two days are quite the same!
What could your day look like?
You might be…
- Welcoming visitors and helping them make the most of their day at Tūhura
- Starting conversations and sharing stories about our exhibitions and collections
- Getting hands-on in the Tūhura Science Centre and helping visitors discover the science behind our interactives
- Delivering tours, shows and presentations
- Spending time in our Tropical Forest, including helping with animal husbandry and talking to visitors about the animals, their habitats and conservation
- Being part of a fun, supportive team that keeps the Museum humming
The role combines visitor engagement, science communication, tours and presentations, animal care, safety and general Front of House responsibilities.
Sounds like you?
You don’t need to be a walking encyclopaedia or know the answer to every question that comes your way: curiosity, confidence and a willingness to learn are much more important!
We’re looking for people who genuinely enjoy being around people. You’ll be friendly, approachable and comfortable striking up a conversation with visitors of all ages and backgrounds.
Customer service experience is important, and you’ll need great communication and teamwork skills, confidence engaging with people, and either some experience presenting to groups or a willingness to give it a go. An interest in museums, science, social or natural history would be a definite bonus.
