RMIT renews decade-long partnership as ACMI’s Major University Partner, RMIT University, 24 July 2026
RMIT University is now recognised as ACMI’s Major University Partner, marking the continuation of a 10-year collaboration that has become a cornerstone of Australia’s screen-based creative industries.
As Australia’s #1 ranked university for Art & Design (*QS World University Rankings by Subject 2026), RMIT’s partnership with Australia’s national museum of screen culture creates rich and diverse opportunities for collaborative public programming, and student, academic and public engagement.
A launchpad for emerging creators
One key initiative is the ACMI + RMIT Audience Lab, an industry pathway program that invites game developers, filmmakers, moving image artists and other emerging screen-based creators to showcase works-in-progress and receive real-time feedback from museum visitors. Backed by an RMIT-led skills workshop that helps participants translate audience reactions into meaningful development insights, the Lab has tested more than 180 projects since 2018 and supported RMIT Bachelor of Design (Games) alumni who have gone on to receive major industry recognition, including award-winning titles such as Cult of the Lamb and Untitled Goose Game.
Building on this model, the ACMI + RMIT Young Creators’ Lab adapts the format for 10 to 16-year-olds. The program investigates how educational gaming fosters creativity, critical thinking and play-based skills development. A recent Australian Research Council (ARC) grant is supporting curriculum development aligned with the program, helping scale game-creation learning opportunities for secondary students and extend earlier work in school-based screen, media and digital literacy.
