The World’s Biggest Dinosaur comes to Sydney, 8 October 2026
Almost 38 metres long, around 70 tonnes and bigger than any land animal ever discovered, Patagotitan mayorum is coming to Sydney. The colossal prehistoric giant roamed Patagonia during the Cretaceous period around 100 million years ago and will lead a cast of dinosaurs from across the region when the blockbuster international exhibition The World’s Biggest Dinosaur: Dinosaurs of Patagonia opens at the Australian Museum this November, kicking off a year-long program marking the AM’s 200th anniversary.
Featuring towering dinosaur skeletons, real fossils, immersive multimedia experiences and the latest scientific discoveries, Dinosaurs of Patagonia invites visitors to come face-to-face with some of the largest and most extraordinary creatures ever to walk the Earth. At almost 38 metres long, Patagotitan will stretch the entire length of the Australian Museum’s Touring Hall, giving visitors a spectacular sense of the sheer scale of the largest land animal ever discovered.
The exhibition explores the remarkable discoveries made in Patagonia in southern Argentina, one of the world’s richest dinosaur fossil regions, and the extraordinary diversity of prehistoric life uncovered there.
The World’s Biggest Dinosaur: Dinosaurs of Patagonia is the first major event in a year-long program marking the Australian Museum’s 200th anniversary. Across 2027, the Australian Museum will come alive with blockbuster exhibitions, major public events, talks, performances, after-hours experiences and family activities celebrating 200 years of curiosity, discovery and the people, stories and ideas that have shaped how we see the world.
Australian Museum Director and CEO Kim McKay AO said there could be no better way to begin the AM’s 200th anniversary year than with one of the biggest dinosaur exhibitions ever presented in Australia.
“The Australian Museum has long been Sydney’s dinosaur museum, and Dinosaurs of Patagonia takes that fascination to an entirely new scale,” Ms McKay said.
“Standing beneath the 38-metre-long Patagotitan is a genuinely awe-inspiring experience. Alongside these incredible giants, visitors will discover remarkable fossil finds, learn about the ancient connection between South America and Australia as part of the supercontinent Gondwana, and see how discoveries in Patagonia continue to change what we know about prehistoric life.”
Developed by Argentina’s renowned Museo Paleontológico Egidio Feruglio (MEF), Dinosaurs of Patagonia brings together 16 spectacular skeleton casts, rare fossils and remarkable discoveries spanning more than 160 million years of prehistoric life. At its heart is Patagotitan mayorum, the largest land animal ever discovered, whose towering full-sized skeleton offers visitors a humbling encounter with one of nature’s greatest giants.
Visitors will also encounter Tyrannotitan chubutensis, one of the most ferocious predators of the Cretaceous period, alongside Manidens condorensis, one of the smallest dinosaurs known to science. Together, these remarkable specimens reveal why Patagonia has transformed our understanding of prehistoric life.
