AAM statement on Capital JM tragedy

Statement on the Tragedy Outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, DC, American Alliance of Museums, 23 May 2025

The American Alliance of Museums mourns the tragic and senseless loss of life that occurred outside the Lillian & Albert Small Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, DC. We extend our deepest condolences to the families of the victims, their loved ones, and the entire community impacted by this devastating act of violence.

Across the United States, in communities, urban and rural, museums serve as trusted civic spaces—places of learning, dialogue, and connection. They are where communities come together to explore our collective histories, celebrate culture, and help us imagine a better future. This tragedy is an affront to our communities’ need for museums as safe spaces. Museums’ roles as bridges between people and communities have never been more critical. AAM reaffirms our unwavering commitment to protecting and championing museums as essential public spaces for all Americans.
