ANMM’s ‘Capturing the Home Front’ – photographs

New exhibition of photographs from WW II at Australian National Maritime Museum, Photo Review, November 2019

‘Capturing the Home Front’, a new photographic exhibition showing life at home in a world at war has opened at the Australian National Maritime Museum in Sydney.

Featuring photographs by Dorothea Lange, Toyo Miyatake and Australian wartime photographers, Sam Hood, William Cranstone, Jim Fitzpatrick and Hedley Cullen it includes original Depression and WWII photographs taken in the USA. Dorothea Lange’s photographs, which include some famous pictures, are on loan from the Museum of Contemporary Photography in Chicago. The pictures by Toyo Miyatake, a Japanese American internee and professional photographer from Los Angeles were taken with a camera he built and a lens that was smuggled into the Manzanar camp and show camp life. Photographs by the Australian photographers show a wide range of subjects covering wartime industry, Japanese internment and family and country life on our side of the Pacific.

The exhibition will run until 16 February 2020 and is open from 9:30 am to 5:00 pm daily. Prices are as follows: Adult $20, Concession | Child (4-15) $12, Family (2A + 3C) $50, Member | Child (under 4) FREE.
