Duties
The Australian War Memorial combines a shrine, a world-class museum, and an extensive archive. The Memorial’s purpose is to commemorate the sacrifice of those Australians who have died in war or on operational service and those who have served our nation in times of conflict. Its mission is leading remembrance and understanding of Australia’s wartime experience.
The Assistant Accountant’s main role is provide day to day support to the Business Sections within the Memorial by offering budget support and advice when requested or when opportunities to improve the financial results are identified.
The role extends to supporting the Manager Budgets to meet the Memorial’s requirements for Government external budget reporting, including under direction, input into the Central Budget Management system (CBMS) financial system,
The Assistant Accountant also provides backup support to the Finance Systems Administrator for the recently implemented Technology One financial system.
Core Responsibilities
Budgets and Management Accounting:
- review cost and project data to ensure compliance with established business rules;
- assist with internal budgeting and liaise with Sections to explain significant budget variances;
- assist with the development of internal salary and contract staff budgets, including analysis and quality;
- assurance of payroll postings in monthly financial reports;
- assist with regular internal reporting to management and Council; and
- assist with external budget reporting requirements to the Portfolio Department and the Department of Finance.
Financial Reporting:
- investigations of monthly capital expenditure to projects, to ensure appropriate accounting classification;
- some data entry of journals as required, including preparation of accruals;
- preliminary analysis of financial information, with investigation of anomalies and opportunities; and
- suggest remedial action and process improvements to enhance the veracity of reported data.
Financial Operations:
- review of purchase orders prior to system release, to test the veracity of accounting classifications and,
- backup support to the Finance Systems Administrator for the Technology One financial system.
