The Assistant Curator, Archaeology will primarily be responsible for the assessment, inventory, updating of records and packing of the collection in preparation for a forthcoming collection store move. In addition, the role will contribute to the rationalization of the acquisitions backlog, writing acquisition proposals and the processing of proposed and recent collection acquisitions. Reporting to the Curator Archaeology, this is an amazing opportunity for a developing curator passionate about working with Archaeology collections. Please be aware this is a fulltime, but fixed term position with a preferred start date before Christmas.
To be successful in this role, you will have:
- Demonstrated experience and knowledge of archaeology collections and material culture
- A tertiary qualification in Archaeology and/or Museum Studies
- Proven knowledge of Maori material culture
- Good overall understanding of collection management disciplines and best practice in collection care
- Good spatial sense and manual dexterity
- Experience writing acquisition proposals advocating for collection development
- Proactive awareness and engagement with a wide range of cultures and associated protocol and traditions within Auckland, with particular reference to the Maori Dimension (He Korahi Maori) and Pacific Dimension (Teu le Va)
- Demonstrated understanding and commitment to archaeology objects and collections and their interpretive value, and as a core resource for communities and for museum activities.
