The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) is the Northern Territory’s premier cultural institution. It offers a dynamic and diverse arts, science and cultural program to more than 300,000 visitors each year.

MAGNT has seven venues: Bullocky Point, the Defence of Darwin Experience, Fannie Bay Gaol, Lyons Cottage, the Museum of Central Australia (incorporating the Strehlow Research Centre), Megafauna Central and the Alcoota fossil site.
Primary Objective:
In consultation with the Curator of Australian Art, Curator of Aboriginal Art and Anthropologist, this position is responsible for assisting with the research, development, documentation, display and interpretation of MAGNT’s art collections. Reporting to the Head of Curatorial branch, the position will work collaboratively with colleagues in the care of MAGNT’s collections, as well as the development of exhibitions, public programs, communications that engage the community with these collections and assisting with facilitating access to visiting cultural groups.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assist with the research, development and presentation of temporary and permanent exhibitions held in various MAGNT venues.
- Conduct research on the art collections and produce documentation that enhances interpretation and knowledge of these collections in a variety of formats for different audiences.
- Undertake assessment and cataloguing of the art collections and monitor display, valuation, conservation and restoration activities.
- Maintain the accuracy and integrity of administrative and other records relevant to the development and management of the art collections through MAGNT databases and systems.
- Contribute to, participate in and deliver Public Program and Education activities as agreed with the Visitor Experience Coordinator.
- Help to ensure that projects are professionally researched, creatively produced and evaluated to involve and build diverse audiences.
- Assist with the preparation of acquisition proposals and documentation relating to the collection in accordance with the MAGNT collection policy and procedures.
Selection Criteria:
- Relevant tertiary qualifications in visual art or art history studies or equivalent relevant practical experience.
- Experience in researching, writing and documenting projects in a cultural, museum, heritage or related environment.
- Capacity to communicate about art in a variety of formats, in accessible and engaging ways for multiple audiences.
- Good project management skills, an ability to plan, implement and report on a diverse range of activities together with the ability to develop and implement public programs.
- Ability to provide timely and constructive advice on matters concerning visual art, including the selection, research and interpretation of works.
- High level oral and written communication skills with proven ability to write reports and other correspondence in an environment requiring performance of multiple tasks and adherence to deadlines.
- An ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures and beliefs, whilst building relationships with internal and external stakeholders, including the public, donors, other museums and the media.
- Energetic, self-motivated, flexible and adaptable with a sense of humour, able to multi-task and work independently in a hands-on work environment and ensuring work health and safety compliance.
- A team player with an attitude of service and ability to motivate others.
