Duties
Reporting to the Director and the Deputy Director, the Assistant Director, Public Engagement, will lead, direct and oversee the business operations and planning of the Public Engagement Division and provide strategic direction in relation to relevant Museum operations and programs, content and delivery. The Assistant Director plays a key role as part of the Executive Management Group and must demonstrate business acumen, strong financial and human resource management skills, and wide-ranging intellectual and analytical capacities.
The role requires the occupant to have highly developed business acumen and an entrepreneurial approach to the ongoing development of the Museum’s public-facing operations.
The incumbent of this position is required to lead and oversee the engagement of key stakeholders on a range of commercially sensitive matters. The role is responsible for contributing to national and external stakeholder relationships, and it is expected that the incumbent will have sophisticated communication experience to engage and negotiate with highly influential stakeholders on a range of technical and business matters pertaining to the Museum.
The Assistant Director, Public Engagement, will:
1. Develop and implement policies, products and services that meet the Museum’s business objectives including:
- Leading the delivery of front-of-house, education and volunteers programs for the Museum
- Guiding the development and implementation of a program of work to significantly expand the schools delivery program
- Leading a program of revenue-raising activities, and identifying and pursuing opportunities to build sustainable own-source revenue streams
- Expanding partnerships with tourism stakeholders to further develop the Museum’s national and international tourism markets
- Managing a program of visitor engagement activities to build audience and donor base
- Delivering digital services for the Museum that presents ideas, collections and interpretations in innovative and technically advanced ways
- Overseeing relationships with cultural organisations to expand the Museum’s international presence, and identifying and progressing opportunities to advance cooperation across collecting institutions
- Identifying and contributing to opportunities to grow own-source income.
2. Provide strategic and operational leadership and planning and direct the activities of the Division to ensure the timely completion and delivery of all divisional projects and work plans on budget and to a high standard;
3. Advise the Director, Deputy Director and Council of the National Museum of Australia on operational issues;
4. Represent the Museum’s interests in regard to external stakeholders;
5. Contribute to the strategic planning process and direction of the Museum;
6. Ensure that employees are provided with sufficient resources to enable them to perform their duties safely.
