The Exhibition Projects and Interpretation team is responsible for managing the interpretation and operational aspects of exhibition projects including the Museum’s permanent, temporary and travelling exhibitions, and other projects as required. The team has a core role in developing and maintaining an audience-centred approach to the delivery of exhibition projects, and in ensuring a collaborative approach to the development of exhibitions. The team coordinates the delivery of evaluation and audience research required for exhibition projects, and ensures the delivery of quality audience experiences.
The team is responsible for:
- The management and delivery of a gallery development program, which includes the enhancement and development of new and existing permanent exhibition galleries.
- The delivery of operational requirements for the permanent galleries, including coordination of showcase and module changes, maintenance and the coordination of small scale projects that contribute to the delivery of a high quality visitor experience.
- The delivery of temporary exhibitions, both internally and externally developed, on a regular basis for display in the Museum’s three temporary gallery spaces.
- Management of a travelling exhibition program that includes a range of different sized exhibitions that tour to metropolitan, regional and remote Australia and internationally.
- Leadership and coordination of interpretation related tasks, such as formative and summative evaluation, related to the development of all exhibition projects.
- This position leads the development and delivery of permanent gallery changeover and maintenance, temporary and touring exhibition projects. This includes internally developed high profile exhibitions, managing major exhibitions from other venues and the Museum’s program to tour exhibitions nationally.
This position:
- Works with the Exhibitions Co-ordinator to manage exhibition maintenance to ensure a safe and enjoyable environment for Museum visitors.
- Acts as a deputy to the Manager, Exhibition Projects and Interpretation for day to day management of the section, and works in collaboration with other Museum staff and business units on a range of projects.
- Supervises a changing team of staff including three Exhibition Coordinators and the two Exhibitions Officers as required.
- Applies project management processes and principles across multiple exhibition projects, including the development of plans, reports, schedules, risk assessments and monitoring processes.
- Leads diverse teams of Museum staff and external contractors in the delivery of major high profile exhibition projects.
- Provides strategic advice and direction as required for business and section plans.
- Prepares reports, policies and procedures on a regular basis in regard to exhibition development, risk management, delivery and touring.
- Oversees and implements sound contract management, procurement and budget practices to the exhibition development process.
- Represents the Museum at internal and external meetings and forums, and maintains a strong network of peer relationships within the industry.
- Assists with the physical installation and de-installation of Museum exhibitions at the Acton site and at host venues for travelling exhibitions.
- Ensures that he/she has sufficient supervision, instruction and equipment to undertake his/her work safely and that employees are provided with sufficient supervision, instruction and equipment to enable them to perform their duties safely.
- Coordinates operational project and team meetings, and ensure actions and decisions are delivered to teams in an appropriate and timely manner.
- Liaises and negotiate outcomes with exhibition and project stakeholders, both internal and external to the Museum staff.
- Works independently, with minimum supervision to manage major exhibition projects of varying sizes and complexity.
- Ensures they have an understanding of the resources available to deliver the exhibition program, monitor project budgets and undertake a range of procurement activities.
- Manages meetings, write minutes and manage the circulation of design drawings and documentation to internal staff and contractors.
- Manages procurement processes and supervision of contractors and consultants associated with design, assessment, fabrication, touring and installation of exhibitions.
- Contributes to creative and innovative solutions to delivery of exhibition development and delivery tasks, and implement the development or revision of procedures when necessary.
- Works collaboratively with Museum staff to deliver an effective and efficient exhibition program.
- Assists with the installation of travelling exhibitions as needed. This may require interstate travel.
- Ensures high priority is given to the delivery of a safe, secure and enjoyable environment for visitors, and that the safety of staff and contractors is at the forefront of planning and deliver.
- Ensures that he/she has sufficient supervision, instruction and equipment to undertake his/her work safely and that employees are provided with sufficient supervision, instruction and equipment to enable them to perform their duties safely. This includes the development of Safe Work Method Statements and risk and issue documentation.
