The Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences (MAAS) is an executive agency of the New South Wales State Government. The Powerhouse Precinct at Parramatta is one of the largest cultural infrastructure projects currently being undertaken in Australia. The project will transform and renew one of Australia’s oldest and most important cultural institutions and carry forward its legacy to reflect the changing needs of the contemporary communities of NSW.
The MAAS Project is the relocation of the Powerhouse Museum and part of a wider government project for the creation of a new arts and cultural precinct in western Sydney. The Assistant Registrar will be a part of a team working on the preparation of the collection currently stored at Ultimo for digitisation and relocation to the Museums Discovery Centre.
Key highlights of the role:
- Assist with the implementation of the museum’s collection and collection-based information systems according to professional museum standards and NSW regulatory requirements
- Assist the Manager and Registrars with relevant operational planning processes and policy development
- Build and maintain external stakeholder relationships, including museums and galleries, government departments and other organisations
- Assist with ensuring safety, security, location control and maintenance of objects on display and in storage.
What will it take?
- We are looking for someone to join the team with the following attributes:
- A sound knowledge and experience in museum collection management and documentation, including storage and exhibition processes.
- Experience in the handling, packing, transport and storage of all types of museum objects, to professional museum level, and sound knowledge of national and international freight procedures.
- Demonstrated ability to work independently and as a member of a team
- Excellent organisational and administrative skills and attention to detail
- Knowledge and experience of collection information systems, barcoding and digital photography
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to prepare high quality documentation and reports
- Demonstrated understanding of risk management and disaster preparedness
