The Museum of Applied Arts and Sciences sits at the intersection of the arts, design, science, and technology and plays a critical role in engaging communities with contemporary ideas and issues. The Powerhouse Precinct at Parramatta is one of the largest cultural infrastructure projects currently being undertaken in Australia. The project will transform and renew one of Australia’s oldest and most important cultural institutions and carry forward its legacy to reflect the changing needs of the contemporary communities of NSW.
The opportunity
We are currently seeking an Assistant Registrar (Grade 2) to join our team based in the Museums Discovery Centre in Castle Hill. In this role you will work across the Registration and Conservation units implementing Museum policies, processes and procedures encompassing loans, collection administration, collection stores and logistics, documentation, exhibitions, archives management, and preventive conservation.
Day to day, you will assist with collection administration, stores and logistics, documentation and exhibitions, archives management, ensuring optimal internal and external access to the collections. This includes assisting the Manager and Registrars with relevant operational planning processes and policy development and contributing to the implementation of the Museum’s strategic plan, ensuring statutory and legislative requirements are adhered to and effective risk management procedures are in place.
To be successful in this role you will need to possess the following skills, experience and attributes:
- Sound knowledge and a minimum of 2 years’ experience in museum collection management and documentation
- Experience in the handling, packing, transport and storage of all types of museum objects, to professional museum level, and knowledge of national and international freight procedures. Experience with large object logistics and storage would be an advantage
- Knowledge and experience of collection information systems, barcoding and digital photography
- Demonstrated understanding of risk management, integrated pest management and emergency preparedness
- The position requires a relevant degree or qualifications or equivalent experience
- Driver’s licence & Forklift License is essential
- Medium Rigid truck licence is desirable
