Auckland Museum is an influential, much-loved organisation at the centre of Auckland’s identity, committed to developing and sharing engaging content through its galleries, exhibition, events and educational programmes.
A half time, fixed-term position exists for a highly motivated person to join the Museum at an exciting time of redevelopment and renewal. The project focused role of Associate Curator Documentary Heritage is responsible for delivering an oral history programme in response to and support of Phase One Gallery Renewal.
With a strong emphasis on collaboration across the Information, Library and Enquiry Services team and the wider gallery renewal project team, this role is focused on end-to-end development and delivery of an oral history programme which includes research, planning, conducting interviews, and preparing interview material for accession in the Museum’s collection. This role presents a unique opportunity to help tell the diverse stories of the Auckland region through the voices of its people in both English and non-English languages, particularly Te Reo Maori.
It is expected that the role will bring strength in research areas that are complementary to the existing curatorial team, particularly the Curator Manuscripts, with the ability to liaise with and facilitate input from curators from across the Museum’s collection areas. The role will also contribute to and lead aspects of co-development of content with communities, partners and stakeholders.
To be successful in this role, you will:
- Relevant postgraduate qualifications or equivalent experience in a relevant field such as Maori, Pacific, NZ social or military history, Communication Studies, Journalism, Media with a specialization or interest in oral or public history.
- Demonstrated end-to-end experience in planning, developing and conducting oral history interviews, including research, schedule design, annotation and assigning metadata.
- Knowledge of oral history and digital storytelling as it applies to the themes of gallery renewal
- Demonstrated knowledge of good practice as it applies to oral history methodology including research, ethics, rights and permissions, preservation standards and equipment requirements
- Knowledge of New Zealand documentary heritage and sector and its international context
- Must have outstanding verbal and written communication skills, and strong analytical, planning and time management skills.
- A collaborative approach and superior interpersonal skills will be essential in dealing with diverse groups including the public, academic peers, museum project teams and across all tiers of the museum.
