Tāmaki Paenga Hira: Tui tui hono tangata, whenua me te moana.

Auckland War Memorial Museum: Connecting through sharing stories of people, lands and seas.

Auckland Museum is a much-loved culture and heritage organisation at the heart of Auckland’s identity, committed to developing and sharing engaging content through its galleries, exhibition, events and educational programmes. We are Auckland’s home of commemoration as well as the country’s oldest research institution and a major tourist destination. Auckland Museum is proud to have a strong Pacific dimension with a strategy document titled Teu le Vā, which ensures our Pacific collections and communities are embraced and celebrated.

In this fixed-term contract role, working collaboratively with the Associate Curator, Heritage Publications, you will complete a review of Pacific content in the Documentary Heritage collections, which include manuscripts, photographs, prints, drawings, posters, maps, paintings, oral histories and publications. Analysis of the results and design of a programme of work will follow, that enables active collaboration and engagement with the Pacific communities to create a greater understanding of their taonga in the Museum’s collection. We intend to have collections easily and meaningfully accessible through appropriate language, description and classification, and through the use of digital channels.

You will have thorough experience of Pacific communities and documentary heritage collections and be able to deliver positive outcomes when working with wide range of groups. Fluency, or on the path to fluency, in at least one Pacific language is essential, in tandem with excellent communication skills, a collaborative approach and a positive work ethic.

To be successful in this role, you will offer:

  • A thorough and proven understanding of Pacific collections and communities
  • Demonstrated experience working with Pacific communities
  • Fluency in at least one Pacific language
  • A sound understanding of Pacific research resources
  • A relevant degree, or equivalent work experience, in a related field
  • Demonstrated experience and knowledge of documentary heritage collections and their interpretive value, as well as undertaking collection development relating to Documentary Heritage collections, in particular assessing and cataloguing collections
  • A collaborative approach and excellent interpersonal skills will be essential in dealing with diverse groups including the public, Pacific peoples, iwi and whanau, community groups, museum project teams and staff across all tiers of the Museum

You must be currently eligible to work in New Zealand to apply for this fixed term position.

Auckland Museum offers a rich and fulfilling work life where we embrace diversity and nurture our bicultural capability as demonstrated in our Teu le Vā and He Korahi Māori strategies. We also offer a range of great benefits such as flexible work and leave and an award-winning wellbeing programme.

This is a great opportunity for someone looking to be part of a fabulous New Zealand organisation committed to telling our national and Auckland stories, reflecting our unique place in the South Pacific.
