Associate Director | Tumu Tuarua, Ngā Manu Atarau

Museum of New Zealand Te Papa Tongarewa

Associate Director, Ngā Manu Atarau

For nearly two decades, Te Papa has housed, nurtured and empowered the legacies of Aotearoa and its people. We are built on a foundation of innovation and co-creation – a striking collision of community and culture that has transformed our history and our heritage into something tangible, something engaging. As our journey continues, we embrace the idea of renewal and the opportunity to once again delve into Aotearoa, its past, present, and future. We pride ourselves on what our predecessors have created, something that is contemporary, cutting-edge, and unique to our country.

Here is an opportunity that is unlike any other. As our Associate Director with leadership across the whole of the Ngā Manu Atarau directorate working directly with the Kaihautū and across Te Papa, you will head the strategic direction of our taonga and our stories, ensuring they are presented to Aotearoa and the world in a meaningful, unique, and respectful way.

The people of your directorate will look to you to inspire them, enabling them to forge successful partnerships with tangata whenua and align themselves and our collections intelligently and soundly with iwi across Aotearoa. Under your leadership, they will flourish. Alongside the Kaihautū, you will create and develop an environment that ensures Mātauranga Māori is interwoven throughout the museum; and bring the philosophy of Mana Taonga into daily practice. Your strong relationship skills will come to the fore as you build on key partnerships with Iwi, government agencies, culture and heritage organisations, and Museums Aotearoa in order to help your team to achieve their objectives.

You are well renowned for your extensive tikanga and te reo Māori knowledge and your in depth understanding of Iwi. You’re a leader. Someone who inspires and motivates, encouraging people to work to the best of their ability in a respectful and knowledgeable way. You’ve delivered recognised and complex projects and are likely to have formed high quality partnerships and connections along the way with iwi and Māori organisations. You embrace diversity and accept change; you want to see our taonga brought to life in a way that will envelop and move people.

Now is your time to bring your exceptional abilities to an organisation that is constantly breaking new ground and has represented the Māori people, their heritage, and their ancestry from day one. You will be surrounded by work that is both fascinating and tangible in a role that is as rewarding as it is monumental.

If you’re ready to take part in one of the most important and inspiring evolutions in both New Zealand and the museum sector worldwide, we would love to talk to you.

Kāore he tūranga e rite ki tēnei. Ko tā te Tumu Tuarua he kaiārahi i Ngā Manu Atarau, he mahi ngātahi me te Kaihautū puta noa i Te Papa Tongarewa.

I a koe e manutaki ana ka puāwai tō kāhui.

He manu tiaki koe i te rerekētanga, ā-tangata, ā-taiao rānei.
