Sydney Observatory is part of the Programs and Engagement Department. Programs and Engagement are responsible for providing a range of programs and services for a culturally diverse client/user base. These programs and services aim to increase visitor understanding of the museum’s historic sites, contemporary technologies and scientific endeavours, collections and exhibitions and also facilitate repeat visitation.
The Astronomy Educator (Casual Guide) delivers Sydney Observatory public programs and is required to work evening shifts on both week days and weekends. Astronomy Educators deliver public programs and provide a high standard of customer service. The role is occasionally required to research, develop, implement and deliver updates to the tour program and works together with the education and visitor services teams to ensure excellent visitor experiences.
Essential Requirements
- Knowledge of one or more of the following: astronomy, physics, Indigenous astronomy, science communication and their practical applications.
- Experience and skills in presenting to a general public and/or educational audience
- Highly developed oral and written communication skills
- Organisational ability and conflict resolution skills
- Proven reliability, respect and team commitment
- Ability to work without supervision in the evenings.
Desirable
- Experience and high level ability to set up and use telescopes
- Ability to adapt to using multi-media and telescope technologies including imaging and control software
- Knowledge of the Observatory’s history, collection, procedures, programs, services and the needs of its existing and potential audiences
- No formal qualifications are necessary. However completed or partial completion of tertiary qualification in astronomy, physics, science, education, communication and postgraduate studies are desirable and enhance the skills and abilities required of the position.
