The Australian War Memorial New Entrance is an exemplar in its resolution and articulation of a moving and monumental public space that places human experience at the forefront. The design demonstrates a high level of skill and dexterity and the jury highly commended the visceral qualities of the entrance space. This project also exemplifies how craftsmanship can amplify solemnity through the showcasing of material aptitude and its exceptionally detailed execution. The Australian War Memorial New Entrance is an interior space that is profoundly respectful and impactful, as well as awe inspiring.

Design statement

The Australian War Memorial New Entrance redefines the visitor experience through a solemn yet welcoming interior. Blending natural materials, curated lighting, and intuitive spatial planning, the design fosters reflection and connection. Anchored by the Oculus, the interior balances functionality with symbolism, enhancing accessibility, adaptability and reverence for history.

The Australian War Memorial New Entrance is located in Canberra, Australian Capital Territory on the land of the Ngunnawal.
