The Museum and Art Gallery of the Northern Territory (MAGNT) is the Northern Territory’s premier cultural institution. It offers a dynamic and diverse arts, science and cultural program to more than 300,000 visitors each year.

We are both a museum and art gallery with collections, exhibitions and programs across our core areas of Aboriginal culture, natural sciences, history and art focussing on Northern and Central Australia and our near neighbours.

MAGNT’s objective is to maintain the highest standards of excellence in preserving, researching, exhibiting and communicating the record of natural history, art and peoples of the Northern Territory. Our vision is to be a world-class museum connecting people and stories of the Northern Territory.

MAGNT has seven venues: MAGNT (Bullocky Point), the Defence of Darwin Experience, Fannie Bay Gaol, Lyons Cottage, the Museum of Central Australia (incorporating the Strehlow Research Centre), Megafauna Central and the Alcoota scientific reserve.

MAGNT is currently experiencing a significant period of growth.  Additionally the Government recently committed $50 million to build a new art museum in Darwin’s CBD to be operated by MAGNT.

Primary Objective:

Reporting to the Assistant Director Corporate Services, working closely with Darwin based managers and working in partnership with external stakeholders, this position is responsible for MAGNT’s central Australian operations. This will involve managing MAGNT’s central Australian facilities, our relationships within the Araluen Cultural Precinct, and other key organisations in Alice Springs and central Australia.  As a member of MAGNT’s Management Team, the position will provide high level advice and expertise and participate in planning exercises that contribute to the development of business operations and work plans.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Manage MAGNT’s central Australian operations, including the Museum of Central Australia, Megafauna Central and the Alcoota fossil site.
  2. Coordinate the activities of the Strehlow Research Centre Board, including meetings, papers, minutes and follow up on actions.
  3. Working in close collaboration with the Assistant Director Corporate Services and MAGNT’s Management Team, provide a central Australian perspective towards the development and implementation of financial, facility, human resource, administration, research, exhibition, visitor experience and collections management programs, as relate to central Australia, and guide timely program delivery within resource allocations.
  4. Facilitate the effective collaboration between MAGNT’s Alice Springs and Darwin based staff.  Facilitate the incorporation of appropriate support from Darwin based staff towards central Australian projects.
  5. Manage Administrative and Engagement / Visitor Experience staff working across the central Australian sites and provide day to day supervision of curatorial and project staff including contractors.
  6. Manage MAGNT’s relationships within the Araluen Cultural Precinct and develop and maintain professional networks, links to stakeholder groups and partnerships that are representative of MAGNT interests with other cultural, tourism, Aboriginal and Government organisations in central Australia.  Promote and represent MAGNT at management level on committees, boards and public events as required.
  7. In consultation and collaboration with appropriate MAGNT staff, primarily other managers, utilise professional networks to identify and develop collaborations that deliver enhanced outcomes for MAGNT.

Selection Criteria:

  1. Experience in business planning within a cultural or scientific environment including, but not limited to: facilities management, policy and procedure development, budgeting and resource management, research methodologies, collection management, conservation, exhibition planning and collection information management.
  2. Degree in a field relevant to a multi-disciplinary museum or art gallery combined with prior experience and training as a manager in a related institution.
  3. Strong project and staff management skills with ability to direct, coordinate and review work plans for professional and technical staff; and to evaluate and to update work practice methods and procedures to ensure quality output performance and program delivery in accordance with best contemporary museum practices and industry standards.
  4. High level oral and written communication skills with proven ability to write complex reports, policy papers, Board and Ministerial briefings and other correspondences that report on a diverse range of activities, in an environment requiring performance of multiple tasks and adherence to deadlines.
  5. An ability to interact effectively with people of different cultures and beliefs and to ensure work health and safety system compliance.
  6. Energetic, self-motivated, flexible and adaptable with a sense of humour, able to multi-task and work independently in a hands-on work environment.
  7. A team player with an attitude of service and ability to motivate others.
  8. Proven experience in computer systems including Excel, PIPS, GAS, TRIPS, TRIM or similar systems.
