Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum (AWMM) is a prominent strong hold for Aotearoa New Zealand story telling – showcasing not only the past, but providing an innovative, creative window into our potential future in a digitally enabled world. The Museum tells the story of New Zealand, its place in the Pacific and its people.

Job Description

The Museum is a war memorial for the province of Auckland and holds one of New Zealand’s top three heritage libraries. It has pre-eminent Māori and Pacific collections, significant natural history resources and major social and military history collections, as well as decorative arts and pictorial collections. Part of the social fabric of the city over the decades, the Museum continues to enable cultural wellbeing and social cohesion by enabling Aucklanders to connect with the past and have a sense of their identity and place in a changing world.

Desired Skills and Experience

AWMM is intricately involved in setting best practice standards in national museology, through its research and interpretation of thoughtfully curated stories and artefacts that engage and educate local Aucklanders, New Zealanders, and tourists alike.

AWMM is governed by a Trust Board with statutory accountability for maintaining the Museum for future generations, developing the collections as a scientific and educational resource, and for advancing public value. The Trust Board is supported by sub-committees and Taumata-a-Iwi.

The Chief Executive plays a critical role in leading operational activities combined with shaping the overarching visionary strategy, looking toward the future. Experienced in the practice of museum management and/or museology, the Chief Executive will collaborate with the Trust Board and a range of important stakeholders to set and deliver a sustainable strategy that will enable AWMM to continue to serve Aucklanders and visitors to the city, for today, for tomorrow and for future generations,
