This role represents an exciting opportunity to contribute strategically to one of New Zealand’s leading cultural organisations, one with internationally-significant collections. The incoming COO will have the opportunity to help to deliver ‘Future Museum’, a published twenty year vision. The position will join a team of people who are passionate about making a difference in an institution that narrates the history of this country and of its largest city.

As a new role for the organisation this is an opportunity to leave a genuine legacy in an important Museum located within one of the most famous landmarks in New Zealand. Auckland Museum is about to embark on one of the most ambitious strategies of its history. The person who wins this appointment will have a unique opportunity to be part of the journey and to take others through change as a key leader.

Reporting to the Director (CEO), the COO will raise the standards of project and risk management by planning and delivering major works. The role will need a strong leader who has substantial experience across operational areas.  A museum background is not mandatory but an understanding of the ‘social business’ model and a commitment to help deliver results is required. Reflecting the Museum’s established leadership culture, the incoming COO should be a team-player at heart.

In addition to extensive experience in a senior leadership role, to be successful with this opportunity you will have the following skills and experience:

  • Commitment to work within a social business, recognising multiple bottom-lines; willing and competent to work within a team-oriented structure;
  • Solid evidence of successful project management, including commercial, contract and budget management experience in relation to the implementation of substantial infrastructure programmes and projects;
  • Good commercial intuition combined with discriminating use of data analysis to drive and communicate performance outcomes;
  • Experience in process re-engineering; business improvement; and change management;
  • Knowledge of ICT infrastructure and a commitment to developing digital capacities for modern audiences;
  • Commitment to addressing environmental issues; with experience of practical and cost-effective solutions in a workplace; and
  • An understanding of the principles and practice of the Treaty of Waitangi, and a commitment to share the leadership of the team in the Museum in the post-Treaty Settlement era.
