The Chief Operating Officer will work in close partnership with the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) and in tandem with other members of the Museum’s Executive Leadership Team (ELT) to contribute to the strategic development and growth of the Queensland Museum Network (QMN), across all campuses, as a first-class and high functioning institution. The COO will provide operational leadership and direction, broadly define and articulate metrics for institutional success, provide short- and long-term strategic goals and objectives, and lead special projects as designated by the CEO and Board of the Queensland Museum.
The COO will oversee and ensure that all business and operational aspects of the Museum reflect and are in alignment with the institution’s core curatorial, collection and educational values, as well as with the Museum’s overarching mission and vision. Taking ownership of the Museum’s operational success, the COO will direct and coordinate the Financial, Human Resources, Administration, Information and IT systems, Workplace Health & safety, Facilities, Volunteers and Visitor Services functions, and direct and maximize the financial contribution of the Museum’s earned revenue-generating activities – Retail, Café – Operations. The COO will encourage and support liaison between these departments and the Director and the Board, and cross-functionally with the programmatic aspects of the Museum.
The COO will work closely with their Heads of functions and will provide the guidance, tools and resources necessary to help departments monitor their budgets, and make strategic decisions which reflect and are in line with the Queensland Museum Network goals and priorities. Having the technical as well as the human skills necessary to structure the business activities of a complex cultural institution is of the highest priority.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES INCLUDE
The COO will set high standards for integrity, productivity, professionalism, creativity and cooperation in the workplace with emphasis on the following:
- Provide leadership, strategy and direction, and take the lead in developing best practices in all phases of administrative and operational aspects of the Museum to build upon the Museum’s capacity to effectively serve, and engage with its visitors.
- Provide strategic and operational leadership to the Administration, IMIT, WHS, Facilities, Volunteers and Visitor Services functional managers to develop and implement first class processes, product and opportunities in their teams to deliver exceptional visitor experiences across all QMN campuses and sites.
- On occasion, Act in the role of CEO.
- Oversee earned revenue of the QMN; ensure that the Retail, Café, and Venue Hire and Event Operations reflect the high aesthetic standard of the institution and remain growth oriented and competitive with not-for-profit as well as for-profit alternatives.
- With the Head of Facilities, ensure the functional optimization of the physical plant by addressing operational, aesthetic, security and safety issues in the most cost-effective manner; assure that the building maintains highest standards for cleanliness and attention to detail in both public and office spaces
- Responsibility for major museum infrastructure, facilities and services projects – as Project Executive, on behalf of the CEO.
- Oversee a comprehensive risk management program and ensure workplace health and safety systems, planning, procedures, training, resourcing and culture is in place and adopted and embraced by managers and staff, while taking all safety measures when performing your duties.
