The Sovereign Hill Museums Association is an Australian tourism icon that attracts some 500,000 visitors annually. The Outdoor Museum is international renown as a living museum featuring rare trades, and programs and experiences that interpret a pivotal point in Australia’s history.

Our visitor experience offering includes: Sovereign Hill Outdoor Museum, Sovereign Hill Hotel, AURA and Narmbool and soon to be opened Australian Centre for Rare Trades and Arts and the Australian Centre for Gold Rush Collections which cares for a nationally and internationally significant collection of over 150,000 objects and protects the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of the Victorian gold rush. In all, some 350 staff work to bring our goldrush story to life. They are supported by over 250 volunteers.

We are entering a pivotal phase of our evolution and seek an experienced executive who can lead our team with renewed energy and passion.

The Chief Operations Officer will be responsible for delivering an exceptional visitor experience through the efficient operations of the Association’s Outdoor Museum, Hotel and Aura as well as delivering commercial outcomes by optimising returns from onsite retail sales, food and beverage commissions and visitation driven through group travel, corporate functions/meetings, conferences and incentive groups. .

A data driven professional with a great coaching and mentoring style, the incumbent will ensure deep analysis of visitor feedback, financial performance and external market dynamics to steer future evolution of the delivery approach to the visitor experience.

Experience & Qualifications

  • 5-10 years of executive level operational experience in a museum or similar institution of comparable size and scope
  • Proven managerial, problem-solving and planning capabilities and significant financial, administrative, human resources, and day-to-day operating responsibility
  • Exceptional executive presence, business acumen and presentation skills
  • Skilled communicator and effective leader
  • Results-oriented, adept at seeing the big-picture, planning, prioritising, organising, and following through with an ability to maintain balance and perspective
  • Exceptional people qualities, knows when to be flexible and adaptable
  • Tertiary qualifications in Business, History, Museum Studies, Cultural Heritage Studies, Archaeology, Material Culture or similar fields is highly regarded
