Collection Manager, Biological Sciences (Terrestrial Invertebrates)

Role Purpose:

The Collection Manager, Biological Sciences (Terrestrial Invertebrates) is responsible for the collection, preparation, identification, data, incorporation, loan, scientific study and interpretation of specimens in the South Australian Museum’s Biological Sciences Collections. This position will also facilitate public and research access to the collection and will care for these collections alongside, and under the direction of, the Collection Manager Terrestrial Invertebrates.

The Terrestrial Invertebrates Collections at the South Australian Museum comprise insects, springtails, arachnids (especially mites and spiders), and myriapods. It is one of the premier collections of Australian insects and springtails in the world, and also contains material from New Zealand, Asia, the Pacific and Antarctica. There are over 2 million specimens.

Key Selection Criteria:

  1. Sound experience with specimen-based collections management practice.
  2. Sound experience in managing collection items, data and research material in a rational, accurate and helpful manner.
  3. Sound knowledge of terrestrial invertebrate biology and taxonomy and use of identification aids.
  4. Knowledge of the design, implementation and delivery of digitisation projects.
  5. Knowledge of the role of cultural institutions, museums, most desirably in the areas of Biodiversity.
  6. Experience with, and enthusiasm for, science communication.
