ABOUT THE POSITION:
The purpose of the position is to manage the Geosciences Collections (minerals, gemstones, rocks, ores, meteorites and impactites) and associated collection information in order to enable their use in Museum research and public programs and by external stakeholders.
Notable skills and experiences:
- Expert knowledge and experience in the identification of and classification of geological specimens, in particular mineral specimens.
- Expert knowledge and experience in managing a Museum Collection, and knowledge of national and international principles, practises, standards and ethics around management of such a collection.
- Knowledge and experience in the collection, preparation and preservation/conservation and identification of minerals and rocks under field and laboratory conditions. Experience in applying analytical techniques such as X-ray diffraction, XRF, Electron Microprobe analysis and scanning electron microscopy is advantageous.
- Knowledge of, and experience in, the use of a range of computer applications for collection management purposes, including databases and location control techniques such as EMu and MVWISE.
- Experience in developing and implementing collection management policy and procedures.
- Experience in devising and managing projects and in training staff and/or volunteers.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, including the ability to provide written and verbal advice to key stakeholders within and beyond the Museum.
The successful applicant will have an appropriate tertiary qualification in Geology or experience deemed equivalent.
