Auckland Museum currently has a permanent opportunity for a highly motivated Collection Manager Human History to join the Museum at an exciting time of redevelopment and renewal.

The position is a key role within the Human History team and is part of the wider Collection and Research directorate. As one of a team of Collection Managers, the role is responsible for the expert processing and documentation of recently acquired Human History collection objects, and for providing access to collections through hosting visitors to the collection, responding to enquiries, and contributing to loans, exhibitions and public programmes. This role has a particular focus on the Museum’s Applied Arts & Design and World Ethnology collections.

To be successful in this role, you will offer:

  • Relevant museum experience including object handling, cataloguing and packing
  • Subject knowledge in Applied Arts & Design and/or World Ethnology
  • A current and full driver’s licence
  • A relevant degree
  • Knowledge of Tikanga Maori, especially relating to collections
  • Excellent interpersonal and time management skills, with a strong work ethic
  • An ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, holidays and/or weekends

This role, along with the contribution of the broader Collections and Research directorate is at the heart of many of the Museum’s aspirations. The collections, and knowledge about them, are often the essential raw material for exhibitions, programmes and events for family, formal education and tourist audiences. The role is as varied as the working environment and will require enthusiasm, hard work, warmth and flexibility.
