Auckland Museum is a much-loved culture and heritage organisation at the heart of Auckland’s identity, committed to outstanding management of its world-class collections and the employees and volunteers who tell the Museum’s stories. We are Auckland’s home of commemoration as well as the country’s oldest research institution and a major tourist destination.

The Natural Science department currently has an opportunity for a highly motivated and versatile Collection Manager, Marine Fauna to be responsible for the Marine collections (Marine Invertebrates, Fish and Geology/Palaeontology) for a period of 12 months. This is a full-time position providing parental leave cover.

The Collection Manager is responsible for the expert physical care, processing and documentation of collection items, and for providing access to collections by supporting visitors, volunteers, administering and managing loans, responding to enquiries, and contributing to exhibitions and public programmes.

To be successful in this full time but fixed term role, you will offer:

  • A tertiary Degree relevant to the Museum’s natural science collections
  • Demonstrated knowledge of Linnaean classification systems and taxonomic science
  • Experience with collection management databases, Vernon CMS preferred
  • Experience in the preparation of natural science specimens, marine fauna preferred
  • Evidence of ability to work collaboratively and in cross-functional teams
  • Proven effective interpersonal and efficient time management skills
  • Strong attention to detail and accuracy
  • A reasonable level of fitness and the ability to lift objects, as well as operate mechanical equipment such as pallet jack, forklift and wave lifters
  • An ability to work flexible hours, including evenings, holidays and/or weekends as required
  • A current driver’s licence
  • Understand the principles of equal opportunities, diversity management and the Treaty of Waitangi as they relate to the Museum environment
