Collection Services Officers are involved in the conservation, preservation, storage, movement, packing, display and documentation of the National Collection. The roles can involve: planning, and carrying out preservation tasks; coordinating, monitoring and reporting on preventive conservation activities; and assisting with conservation programs across the textiles, paper, paintings, objects, photographs, film and sound labs.

Note:  There are two positions – one will be placed in the Conservation Laboratories team and the other in the Preservation Programs (Preventive, Hazards and Analysis) team. Positions are required to be flexible and open to working across both teams depending on priorities.

Core Responsibilities

Under general direction undertake a range of collection management tasks across the conservation teams including:

  • Carry out the survey, documentation and basic conservation treatment of collection objects;
  • Carry out display preparation of conserved items for exhibitions and loans. This can include framing, making supports, and mounting;
  • Conservation standard packing, rehousing and storage of collection items;
  • Coordinate preventive conservation programs including freezer and anoxic programs, integrated pest management and environmental monitoring;
  • Document collection management activities on the Memorial’s collection management system;
  • Administrative tasks relating to the preservation, storage and movement of objects.

Also:

  • Liaise with internal and external stakeholders in relation to preservation activities
  • Ensure that Work Health and Safety guidelines and practices have been implemented and are observed in collection work
