Auckland Museum is a much-loved organisation at the centre of Auckland’s identity, committed to outstanding management of its extensive collections and the permanent and volunteer staff who tell the Museum’s stories.

An exciting opportunity exists for a highly motivated Collection Technician to join the Museum on a 1 year fixed term basis at an exciting time of redevelopment and renewal. This position will cover for the incumbent Collection Technician while she takes primary carer leave.

The role of Collection Technician, Pacific Collection Access Project contributes to the upgrade of information about the Pacific collection by converting paper-based records into an electronic database, improving the richness of database records in collaboration with Cultural Knowledge Holders from Auckland’s Pacific communities and physically cataloguing the collection. The resulting, significantly enriched electronic catalogue of the Pacific Collection will support a wide range of future programmes which are the basis of the Museum’s revised onsite, offsite and online programmes anticipated by Future Museum.

The Collection Technician, Pacific Collection Access Project role, is a unique opportunity for people with a museum collection background to make a meaningful difference to the understanding of Pacific material culture.

To be successful in this role, you will offer;

  • Tertiary qualification in Museum Studies or a field relevant to the Museum’s Human History collections, together with 1-3 years relevant museum experience
  • Awareness and experience working with Pacific material culture and/or historical museum collections
  • Museum object handling skills are essential
  • Collections database experience is essential, preferably in Vernon CMS, with an awareness of relevant descriptive or cataloguing systems and approaches
  • Written and oral skills in one or more Pacific languages is desirable
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and interpersonal skills (including tact, discretion and confidentiality)
  • Evidence of ability to work collaboratively and in cross-functional teams
  • Empathy for bringing the Museum alive, being part of its team, and a well-developed sense of public/community accountability
