Auckland Museum is a much-loved culture and heritage organisation at the heart of Auckland’s identity, committed to outstanding management of its world-class collections and the employees and volunteers who tell the Museum’s stories. We are Auckland’s home of commemoration as well as the country’s oldest research institution and a major tourist destination.

The Collections Information and Access department is seeking a part-time and fixed-term Collection Technician, Botany to be an integral member of a multi-disciplinary project team at Tāmaki Paenga Hira Auckland War Memorial Museum. You will be responsible for creating high-quality object records, rehousing and at times digitising items from our Botany collections. This role is crucial to the achievement of the project, which will highlight the breadth and depth of our collections and form the basis of future onsite, offsite and online access. This part-time role requires 24 hours per week and the fixed term period is for 3 years.

  • To be successful in this part-time role, you will offer:
  • Demonstrated experience with and knowledge of biological taxonomy and Linnaean classification is essential
  • 1-3 years prior experience in a collection documentation, inventory or cataloguing role is a definite role requirement
  • A Tertiary science qualification, especially in a field relevant to the Natural Science collections is desired
  • Sound collection management systems or related database knowledge, such as Vernon CMS is an expectation
  • Proven effective written and/or oral communication skills
  • Strong attention to detail
  • Self-motivation, effective organisation skills and an ability to cope well under pressure
  • An interest in New Zealand flora and fauna is also desirable
